Who We Are
The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory (SABO) is a non-profit scientific and educational organization based in Bisbee, Arizona. Our mission is to promote conservation of the birds of southeastern Arizona, their habitats, and the diversity of species that share those habitats through research, monitoring and public education.

What We Do
Outreach:
Conservation begins with understanding and appreciation of nature. SABO’s programs include walks, workshops, and tours at a variety of outstanding natural areas throughout Cochise County, the heart of southeastern Arizona’s birding paradise. Entertaining and informative presentations for civic and conservation groups, schools, and community events throughout Arizona and nationwide help to build a broad constituency for conservation of Arizona’s wildlife and habitats. SABO also actively promotes ecotourism as a component of sustainable rural economies, acting as consultant to both the public and private sector and cultivating "birder-friendly" businesses.

Research & Monitoring: SABO biologists and volunteers, working in cooperation with government agencies, educational institutions, and other conservation organizations, are gathering information vital to conservation planning. The most prominent of these efforts is a long-term banding study of hummingbirds of the San Pedro River in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management, the Friends of the San Pedro River, and private landowners. SABO has also assisted the National Park Service, Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Arizona Game & Fish Department in monitoring populations of breeding and migrating songbirds in southeastern Arizona and northwestern Mexico and assessing bird activity in areas affected by wildfires and mining. SABO also monitors wintering raptors of the Sulphur Springs Valley in an independent study funded in part by the Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative.

How You Can Help
Your tax-deductible membership or donation makes our work possible. Benefits of membership include discounts on activities such as walks and workshops, e-mail updates, access to members-only Web content, invitations to special events, and most of all the satisfaction of contributing to the future of southeastern Arizona's imperiled wildlife and wild lands. Business and corporate members are acknowledged in the on-line "Birder-friendly Businesses" listing and on the Membership and Events site.
