Echinocereus coccineus (triglochidiatus)

Claret-cup Hedgehog Cactus

The only cactus in Arizona that is adapted for pollination by hummingbirds.
Each stiff, velvety petal is slightly cupped at the tip.

Flower size: 2" - 3" Hardiness: 10 degrees F.
Bloom period(s): Spring/Dry (April-July) Light needs: full sun in cooler areas, part shade in warmest areas
Habitat: rocky cliffs, gravelly slopes in oak and pine-oak woodlands and mixed conifer forest Soil type: well drained
Moisture needs: low, but requires more moisture than true desert cacti to grow and produce flowers
Distribution:

Apache, Cochise, Coconino, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Maricopa, Mojave, Pima?, Pinal, Santa Cruz, Yavapai; western TX, NM, CO, UT, NV, CA

Growing tips: Buy plants from a reputable nursery. A fine plant for a rock garden or container, contrasts well with agaves, yuccas, and low-growing flowering plants.
