Bearded Penstemon, Beardlip Penstemon, Scarlet Beardtongue

A tough and handsome perennial for middle to higher elevations,
with deep green foliage and spikes of scarlet flowers
.

Plant type: Perennial herb Growth habit: low rosette of leaves with tall, erect flower stalks
Family: Snapdragon (Scrophulariaceae)
Plant size: 6" to 36" high Seasonality: evergreen in all climates

Flower color: scarlet red with white interior markings Growth rate: moderate; typically blooms in second year from seed
Flower size: 0.3" wide, 1.2" long Hardiness: 5 degrees F.
Bloom period(s): one per year, Dry Season (May-July) Light needs: full to part sun in cooler areas, part to full shade in warmer areas
Habitat: mountain meadows, canyon bottoms, understory of oak and pine-oak woodland and conifer forest, and road edges, Soil type: well drained, slightly alkaline to slightly acidic
Moisture needs: moderate - needs some supplemental water at lower elevations and during drought
Distribution:

Apache, Cochise, Coconino, Gila, Graham, Greenlee?, Maricopa, Mojave, Navajo, Pima?, Santa Cruz; also NM, TX, CO, UT

Growing tips: Buy mature plants or grow from seed refrigerated in moist sand or soil for at least 1 month. Blooms second year from seed Plant with larkspurs, salvias, low-growing verbenas.
