CACTUS WREN Campylorhynchus bruneicapillus photo by Sheri Williamson Arizona's State Bird (not the Greater Roadrunner - that's New Mexico) is one of the largest and least musical wrens in the world. Its song, which can be heard year round, consists of rhythmic, nasal churring. Pairs typically build their bulky nests in natural fortresses such as clumps of cholla cactus or spiny shrubs. One nest within a territory is used as a nursery, while the others serve as sleeping quarters for the parents or decoys to fool potential predators. |
