The largest of North America's true buteo hawks is also one of our declining raptors. Its grassland habitats have been destroyed or degraded by grazing, mining, residential development, and recreation (particularly off-road vehicles). Several dozen individuals still spend each winter in the
Sulphur Springs Valley of southeastern Arizona, where they hunt gophers, ground squirrels, and rabbits. Up to 30 have been seen on SABO's Hawk Stalks and raptor identification workshops.
