VERMILION FLYCATCHER Pyrocephalus rubinus photo by Sheri Williamson A flamboyant ambassador for wetlands of the American Southwest, this species is actually common throughout much of the New World tropics. Though almost any moist habitat may attract a pair or two during the nesting season, they are most common in lush cottonwood-willow forest such as that found along the San Pedro River and Sonoita Creek. The subtly colored females can be distinguished from similar flycatchers by their more contrasting coloration, proportionally broader shoulders, and more streaked underparts. Vermilion Flycatchers are among many species of flycatchers seen on SABO's River Walks. |
