This checklist covers the entire state of Sonora and adjacent areas of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), western Chihuahua, and northern Sinaloa, including the Copper Canyon (Barranca de Cobre) region. The order of the list is based on the American Ornithologists' Union Check-list of North American Birds, 7th edition (with revisions). Older names (Strickland's Woodpecker, Gray-breasted Jay) and names of particular regional forms (Masked Bobwhite) are included in parentheses. Future enhancements of this list will include habitat, abundance, seasonality, and Spanish names. In addition to the resources listed in the bibliography, Christmas Bird Count results and trip reports from individuals and groups were essential to compiling and updating this list. To report your sightings, contact SABO.
